Interview:
Ocean Winds Eyes Rapid Growth in Australian Offshore Wind Market

Ocean Winds, a joint venture between ENGIE and EDPR, is positioning itself as a significant player in Australia's burgeoning offshore wind sector, following the acquisition of a 1.3 GW seabed license in Gippsland. Speaking at the Australia Wind Energy 2024 conference, Pelayo Rodriguez Alonso, Head of Business Development APAC, outlined the company’s strategic focus on expanding its footprint in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Rodriguez Alonso emphasized that Australia, while a newcomer to offshore wind compared to more established markets like Europe, is advancing at an impressive pace. "Australia’s trajectory in the offshore wind sector is remarkable," he said, adding that the country’s potential for both bottom-fixed and floating wind projects distinguishes it from other markets in the region.

Ocean Winds, which currently manages a global pipeline of 18 GW, including 1.5 GW already built, is prioritizing the development of its Australian projects. Rodriguez Alonso noted that the next steps will involve securing permits and engaging with stakeholders, particularly the First Nations communities.
